READING GARDENS

Reading Gardens
UK Photographer & Writer Exploring Gardens and Historic Landscapes
Gina Dover-Jaques investigates how horticultural experts experience gardens through analogue photography, observation and writing. Her research-led practice explores how professional knowledge shapes the experience of historic gardens and cultivated landscapes.
01 Introduction
Gardens are often photographed as places of beauty, history or design. My work asks a different question: how does professional knowledge shape the experience of landscape?
Through analogue photography, observation and reflective conversation, Reading Gardens begins with observation rather than interview, following specialists as they move through significant gardens to explore how expertise influences attention, interpretation and engagement with place.
02 Bodies of Work
Reading Gardens
A two-year documentary series exploring how different forms of professional expertise shape the experience of historic gardens.
Rather than documenting gardens themselves, the series follows specialists as they move through significant landscapes, examining how knowledge influences observation, interpretation and movement through place.
03 Current Study
A long-term documentary project exploring how professional expertise shapes the experience of gardens.
Planned series:
-
A Head Gardener
-
A Landscape Architect
-
An Ecological Steward
